The Australian Ballet has announced its principal artist Rachel Rawlins will retire from the stage next month.

Ms Rawlins has been a professional ballerina for more than two decades.

She joined the Royal Ballet for two years before rejoining the Australian Ballet as a principal artist in 2001.

She had lead roles in the Ballet’s productions of Madame Butterfly and The Nut Cracker.

Her career saw her dance around the world, including Japan, Malaysia, Singapore and the United Kingdom.

Ms Rawlins grew up in Canberra and most recently returned to the capital to perform as part this year’s Canberra Festival.
