Jumblatt's delegation meets Berri over Cabinet crisis

BEIRUT: House Speaker Nabih Berri met Saturday with a delegation of Walid Jumblatt’s Progressive Socialist Party to discuss the PSP leader’s initiative aimed at resolving the government crisis.

Minister of Displaced Alaaeddine Terro, MP Akram Shehayeb and PSP secretary-general Zafer Naser visited Berri in Ain al-Tineh to discuss means to bridge the deepening gap between rival political groups.

Following the meeting, Terro said Jumblatt will declare on Monday the content of the political document the PSP is preparing.

“We informed President Berri about the content of the document which the PSP leader will declare Monday,” said Terro.

According to Terro, Berri voiced support for the PSP initiative and hailed the party’s attempt to “break the deadlock among the Lebanese and maintain communication and dialogue to prevent the strife continuously threatening the country.”

Jumblatt’s PSP declared last week that it was preparing an initiative to draw the March 14 and March 8 camps closer and engage in National Dialogue in order to prevent sectarian strife and resolve the government crisis.

Lebanon’s political situation has deteriorated following the Oct. 19 assassination of a top intelligence official, Brig. Gen. Wissam al-Hasan.

March 14, who accuse Syria of the killing and hold the Cabinet responsible for it, announced a boycott of government work in a bid to force the collapse of Prime Minister Najib Mikati.

To increase pressure on Mikati, March 14 also set his resignation as a precondition to resume National Dialogue and said they will not take part in the all party talks if the prime minister doesn’t step down.

Following talks with different political rivals, the PSP is expected to formulate the initiative and distribute copies of it to all parties involved.
