The federal opposition will attempt to reintroduce temporary protection visas as a way of preventing people smuggling.

Shadow immigration minister Scott Morrison says the measure’s needed to regain control of Australia’s borders from people trying to enter the country by boat, in the hope of securing permanent residency.

Mr Morrison, speaking on the fifth anniversary of the Labor party’s election to power, says Australia had secure borders five years ago thanks to policies that worked.

But he says five years on that’s not the case with more than 30 thousand people having arrived and continuing to arrive on boats at a rate of two thousand a month.

Mr Morrison will try to introduce a private members’ bill for temporary protection visas in parliament next week.

Under the proposal, the visas would only last until it’s safe for people to return to their home country.
