Concertgoers were turned away from a Mumford & Sons gig in Portsmouth after being found to have fake tickets.

Fan Paula Wynne told BBC News her partner bought a pair from a resale website for £200 but was refused entry to the city’s Guildhall on Thursday.

She said dozens of people were found to have forgeries, including fans from the United States.

Portsmouth Guildhall said police were investigating. The band told those affected to seek refunds.

A police spokeswoman said it was reported that about 100 people were refused entry.

A statement on the band’s website said: “We sincerely hope that not too many of you good honest Mumford & Sons fans have been affected.

“If you have purchased tickets from any secondary vendors then we would urge you to seek your money back immediately.

“Remember to always purchase tickets from official vendors only.”

‘Heartbreak and disappointment’

Those found with fake tickets, which had a face value of £23.50, had them stamped and were given letters from the venue explaining that police had been notified.

Ms Wynne, from Andover, Hampshire, said: “My partner bought the tickets online and he bought a hotel.

“We really wanted to make an occasion of it, it was my first ever live concert.

“We got there last night and were tossed out on our ears.

“It was a reselling site so we realised it was sold out and they would have been a lot cheaper when you first get them on sale.

“There were people who had come from all over the South and in fact there were some guys who had even come over from the [United] States.

“It was just terrible seeing the heartbreak and the disappointment, because all they really wanted to do was just get in and listen to these guys.”

A statement from the venue said: “The Portsmouth Cultural Trust has notified the police of the matter and a fraud investigation has been launched.”
