Tough policy sees transfers to Manus Is.

The federal government has toughened its asylum seeker policies to stop the boats and has begun transferring people, including children, to Papua New Guinea’s remote Manus Island.

Immigration Minister Chris Bowen says all asylum seekers arriving by boat will be denied permanent protection visas for as long as five years, even if they are found to be genuine refugees.

But Mr Bowen has conceded that with more than seven-thousand-500 people arriving in three months, it’s impossible to transfer them all offshore.

He now says many people will be allowed into the community on rolling bridging visas, but they’ll have no work rights, limited accommodation and financial support and won’t be able to bring their families to Australia.
