Egypt: Referendum Result Now Due Tuesday

The official result of the referendum on Egypt’s new constitution will be revealed on Tuesday by the judicial committee who monitored the vote.

Preliminary signs suggest that over 60 percent of Egyptians approve of the charter that was written by an Islamist-dominated assembly and is widely discredited by opposition forces who argue it does not represent all Egyptians.

If the constitution passes, the Shura Council (upper house of parliament) will assume legislative power held by President Mohamed Mursi since the dissolution of the People’s Assembly (lower house).

The lower house was dissolved in June when Egypt’s highest court ruled the parliamentary elections law that brought it to place unconstitutional.

The Shura Council is now expected to draft a parliamentary elections law to pave the way for the election of a new People’s Assembly to act as legislature upon formation.

President Mohamed Mursi, who pushed for the referendum despite political turbulence, will address the nation following the announcement of the final results, the president’s office had said.

Meanwhile, several human rights and civil society organizations had complained that intense violations marred the vote, calling for a re-run.
