World War II bomb deactivated in Croatian town

ZAGREB: Dozens of residents were evacuated on Thursday as experts deactivated a 250-kilo (552-pound) World War II bomb accidentally uncovered in an eastern Croatian town, police said.

Found earlier this week during construction work in the yard of a family house in downtown Slavonski Brod, the bomb was defused at a safe place, a police statement said.

The bomb, dropped during World War II by the Allies when Croatia was controlled by a pro-Nazi regime, was uncovered by a dredger at the depth of just over one metre (yard), officials said.

Several dozen residents were evacuated for security reasons during the operation.

In October, another World War II bomb weighing around a tonne was uncovered within Slavonski Brod’s 18th-century fortress. Experts are still reviewing options to deactivate it.
