A BBC correspondent has seen what seems to be a column of rebel fighters entering central Goma, the main city in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.
He saw an exchange of small arms fire as they moved along the airport road.
Rebel commanders say the airport is now under their control.
Some UN sources have confirmed they believe this to be the case. The BBC has also spoken by telephone to a local resident who said he could see rebel soldiers at the airport.
