THE newest member of the Adelaide Crows fitness coaching team faces assault charges after an alleged drunken city pub brawl early on Saturday morning.
Andrew Young, appointed as Adelaide’s strength and conditioning coach last month, was arrested at the Union Hotel, Waymouth St, about 1.40am after allegedly assaulting a hotel manager.
The former fitness coach at English Premier League team Fulham had been at the hotel with Crows coaches Brenton Sanderson and Matthew Clarke and their partners when he was asked to leave.
An altercation occurred and the hotel manager received bruises and a chipped tooth. The hotel closed immediately afterwards.
Adelaide Football Club media manager James O’Connell said the club had launched an investigation into the incident but made it clear that Sanderson and Clarke, who had arrived at the hotel with Young, had left the venue before the alleged fight.
“There is a police investigation and AFC will do its own investigation . .. that is the only comment we’re prepared to make at this time,” Mr O’Connell said.
Witnesses said Sanderson and Clarke were well behaved and had appeared to be enjoying a quiet night with their partners.
Police confirmed a man aged in his 40s was arrested in relation to the incident and said a man was treated at Royal Adelaide Hospital for injuries.
