Should You Stop Wearing Red Lipstick?

With maturity comes an end to many things you probably wish you’d stopped doing sooner: Dating an endless series of hopeless men, scarfing down instant mac and cheese for dinner, obsessing over what you think others think of you. But should maturity also mean giving up some of your favorite beauty products?

The answer is yes, at least according to over 2,000 women over the age of 45. They completed a recent survey conducted by Nurture Replenish Skincare, a UK-based personal care company, on the ins and outs of aging gracefully. According to the majority of women polled by this survey, ladies should stop wearing high heels, glitter, tight clothes, and fake nails by the time they’re 59—and fake tans are a no-no after age 40.

Our take? Oh, please. While we’re all about embracing natural beauty, we’re definitely not about sacrificing beloved beauty products just because you’ve added another candle to your birthday cake. Still want to rock that wild manicure? Go for it, and any other look, with these tips to pull them off for years to come:

Get a glow—if you want Fake tans can go wrong at any age. If you really want to brighten up your skin this winter, keep it subtle with Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Glow Pads ($ 18; dgskincare.com), which supply a hint of color without the streaks.

Rock red lipstick Red lipstick is an ageless classic—and 38% of this survey’s responders agree. Plus, more years of life means you’ve probably found your perfect shade. Not quite there yet? Upgrade your lipstick regimen with The Dos And Don’ts Of Red Lipstick.

Be adventurous with your nails Sure, you can’t go wrong with a French manicure, but your nails are the easiest way to have fun with beauty products—without looking like Boy George. Still, that doesn’t mean you should go for long, acrylic tips. The key is to keep your nails short—especially when experimenting with color and patterns.
