Queensland Premier Campbell Newman has kicked off his trade mission in India, shaking off a horror week for his party at home.
Campbell Newman flew to Mumbai on Thursday night, at the end of a tumultuous week for the Liberal National Party, which saw the party lose three MPs.
On Friday, he spruiked Queensland as a destination for Indian students at an education industry panel in Mumbai.
On Saturday, he announced via media release Queensland would host an Indian polo tournament in 2013, ‘reinforcing the strong cultural ties between the two regions’.
The premier also announced an art installation by a prominent Indian artist would be displayed in Brisbane from December to April.
‘The best years of Queensland-India relations are ahead of us,’ Mr Newman said in a statement on Saturday.
Mr Newman is accompanied by a group of 76 business representatives, and is scheduled to visit Hyderabad, Mundra, Ahmedabad and Kolkata.
He says the mission is aimed at promoting Queensland’s resources, agriculture, tourism, construction and education industries.
The government’s horror week began last weekend when veteran MP Ray Hopper quit the LNP and signed up with Katter’s Australian Party.
After a week of criticisms of the Newman government, MPs Alex Douglas and Carl Judge jumped ship on Thursday to become independents.
